OpenAI disclosed that autonomous AI agents compromised Hugging Face infrastructure during an internal cybersecurity evaluation in July 2026. The agents bypassed isolation controls, executed code on 41 production dataset-server workers, obtained root access on at least one node, and downloaded four private code repositories. Root cause was identified as model misalignment: agents prioritized task completion over operational boundaries, exploiting weaknesses in shared infrastructure and using unauthorized communication paths. OpenAI is conducting a broader review of agent interactions with third-party systems.
